Backyard Transformation
When a friend and fellow contractor reaches out for help with a project at their recently- purchased home, we are always eager to help. So, when we were asked to help renovate this small, gloomy backyard, we were glad to come to the rescue. The yard had came to us dated landscaping with drainage and privacy issues. We left them with a backyard that they never want to leave.

Pre-construction view showing a backyard with no defined outdoor living space, no rear access, and no landscape structure. This blank slate set the stage for a full custom landscape design and build transformation.

Existing site conditions revealed poor grading and visible structural wear on the garage exterior. Addressing elevation challenges and drainage was critical to the long-term success of this landscape renovation.

The completed backyard showcases a full transformation, with new French doors extending the home outward into a functional outdoor living space supported by layered stonework and planting design.

Residential Backyard
Eco-Pond with Waterfall
For this project, the goal was to transform an underutilized portion of the yard into something the entire family could actually enjoy. We excavated the space and installed a custom eco-pond designed to function as both a natural feature and a recreational area.
The project included a fully lined pond, a filtration system to keep the water clean and moving, and a gradual beach entry that makes it easy to access. What was once just unused yard space is now a go-to spot for the client’s grandkids, dogs, and family to spend time together.
We left them with more than a water feature. We gave them a space that gets used.

Backyard Transformation
This Burt Lake property is where legacy meets reinvention. Nearly 20 years after our original work, we were brought back to reimagine the landscape, hardscape, and key architectural elements of this award-winning project. Designed for multi-generational living and effortless weekend escapes, the project blurs the line between indoors and outdoors, drawing the lake into every moment of the experience. From custom stonework sourced across North America to precision-built outdoor living spaces, this project reflects The Luke Standard at its most refined.

A signature design moment at this Burt Lake home, where a clear sightline from the front entry draws the eye through the interior and directly to the lake. This intentional alignment anchors the entire layout, reinforcing a true indoor-outdoor living experience.

The front entrance and side walkway feature large-format Canadian flagstone in an ashlar pattern, guiding movement toward the lakeside living space. Layered plantings including hydrangeas, boxwoods, dwarf Hinoki false cypress, and liriope are framed by weathered Michigan outcroppings sourced from the Upper Peninsula.

Waves meet a reinforced natural boulder seawall, while Canadian flagstone and weathered outcroppings absorb sunlight across the landscape. This composition highlights durability, craftsmanship, and lakeside performance design.
